Worship & Music Director

The Director of Worship and Music is responsible for the oversight, coordination and implementation of worship experiences in collaboration with ELC ministries, other staff musicians, pastors and the Worship and Music Team.

They are expected to help create worship experiences through preparation and choice of music, striving to keep the liturgy, format, and music relevant, expressive, connective and inspirational. Through their passion, skills and talents they will create worship that matches the mission and vision of the congregation while working to provide a ministry of music that is innovative, creative, and supports Lutheran worship.

A. Worship Leader

• Lead worship and musical services
• Schedule and conduct song leader and choir rehearsals. Provide training and resources to strengthen the Worship and Music Ministry
• Maintain avenues of communication and collaboration with all Staff Musicians and volunteer music leaders
  • o Direct adult choir, integrating choir music into worship settings
  • o Encourage the congregation’s participation in music groups
• Collaborate with the pastor and music staff in preparing the weekly worship service program for broadcast

B. Worship Planning

• Plan the yearly worship calendar with the Worship & Music Team
• Coordinate weekly worship including music selection, worship slides, and musicians 
• Schedule, train, and direct singers to lead congregational singing. Encourage and use volunteers to assist in the ministry 

C. Administrative Duties

• Hiring of supplemental musicians for special services
• Tending to instrument care
• Schedule and lead Worship & Music Team meetings
• Maintain awareness of the music/ worship goals of the congregation and build a cooperative working relationship with other music and worship leaders
• Assist with budget preparation for worship and music to be sent to the Budget committee for inclusion in the budget process
• Select, purchase, and maintain library of music and licensing per budget guidelines in coordination with other music staff
• Prepare a variety of written material and/or media to support and enhance the worship experience 

Qualifications: 

• Previous musical directing or equivalent experience
• Familiarity with Lutheran worship and practices
• Musical accompaniment of choral groups
• Writing and producing written and audiovisual materials that are accessible for a diverse audience

Skills

• Effective leadership of music during worship services
• Effective choral directing 
• Keyboard/ Piano desired but not required (Guitar and other instruments a plus)
• Improvise from a lead sheet or score (desired but not required)
• Knowledge of and access to a variety of music resources relevant to worship settings
• Success developing, and implementing new worship experiences, or a similar situation
• Experience developing written worship programs for broadcast or equivalents that incorporate an understanding of best practices for media, including accessibility, and written and graphic content
• Clear, regular, and timely communication with diverse audiences 
• Organization of work that allows for thoughtful collaborations and complete and timely deliverables
• Positive and collaborative leadership with diverse staff and volunteers 
• Effective communication of information and ideas with a diverse audience 
• Flexibility to adapt to issues that arise during performances with successful ad hoc solutions

Physical Demands of the Job 

• Work in a stationary position 50% or more of the time 
• Access the church campus, including indoors and outdoors
• Interact with a diverse community 
• Give direction musically 
• Monitor performance details at close range (within a few feet of the observer)
• Lifting up to 20 pounds
